I agree that it is impossible to ask of someone in such a tough situation to accomplish the same things as someone who's only job currently in life it is to do well in school. Emotional and time strains can come to those who are rich or poor, but I do believe that having problems such as food insecurity, language barriers, an extra job (or two) or the lack of a car to save time can add up drastically. This means that some students just don't have the time or energy to do so incredibly well in school that they can beat out any kid who gets picked up and dropped off at school from a home where he/she has a quiet desk in a private room to do only homework. Some people manage to do this and they are the ones that make it into the newspapers yet affirmative action does attempt to account for the very real struggles of growing up with an extremely low income.
